Myths in Dentistry

There are many confusions and debates regarding root canal (endodontic) treatment and whether the treatment is actually painful or not. After watching a youtube video of a person crying out in pain while getting a root canal or listening to radio on your way back home- some RJ saying, this should hurt like a root canal, patients often correlate pain with root canals

Myth #1—Root canal treatment is painful.

Truth—Root canal treatment doesn’t cause pain, it relieves it. With modern dentistry and advent of new technology, root canals are not painful.  In fact, a recent survey showed that patients who have experienced root canal treatment are six times more likely to describe it as “painless” than patients who have not had root canal treatment. A deep cavity which has already crossed the hard part of tooth and has reached the nerve will be painful if not treated. Once a root canal is done your pain should effectively be reduced or if the dentist could finish the whole treatment in a day, you could be pain free. So, when one of your friend says, it hurts like a root canal- send him our way!

Myth #2— I Dont have pain- I dont have cavities

Truth— This is one of the biggest misconceptions we have when it comes to our teeth. Cavities or tooth decay can occur at any age and in most cases are not painful or noticeable during the initials phases. In some cases as your cavities get bigger you may not feel any pain until the decay has reached the nerve inside your tooth.

The best way to fight tooth decay is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. This can be done with proper dental care and hygiene. However, if you are not able to prevent tooth decay, you will have a cavity and the second best thing to do is to restore (fill) it with a resin or other filling materials. If you have passed the phase of restoring your cavity, this means that the bacteria in your mouth has dug its way deeper into your tooth and have reached your pulp (nerve). In this case you will not be able to get a simple filling to restore the tooth. Instead extensive work such as a root canal or a crown may be needed to fix the condition of the tooth.

Most cavities occur in hard to reach areas inside your month, such as in between two teeth. Your dentist can detect these cavities with a simple x-ray and restore them early on. Regular dental checkups, the use of diagnostic techniques, and early treatment with preventative or interventional dentistry, can help in maintaining healthy teeth that will last you a life time!

Myth #3– Implants Hurt

Truth— No, it does not. What about extraction? How was your experience when the dentist pulled the tooth? Implants are not even close to the discomfort which you have been thru. When doing the implants, it not only is a pain free process, but it usually is quicker a surgery then you will imagine. In our clinic, single implants are done under a 20 minute window, start to finish, by Dr Rao. A same day extraction, implant and a crown process could be done for patients driving from a distance. There are many misconceptions regarding pain and how difficult the surgery is. With modern techniques like CBCT and surgical stents, the ambiguity in implant surgery is greatly sidelined. Now we can perform a full mouth implant rehab in half a day, when 5-6 years this used to be a multi day task.

Dental Implants in Manassas and Bristow

Dental Implants are pins or screws used to dentistry to replace a missing tooth. Compared to other methods of replacing teeth, dental implants have become the best and primary option for tooth replacement recently due to the high predictability of success and comparatively similar cost to that of a bridge. Compared to a bridge, dental implant treatment does not require you to shave down or mutilate the adjacent teeth.

Implant has 3 components –

  • The fixture- which stays below your gum line in the bone
  •  abutment which extends from the gum to the mouth
  •  Crown – on which you can chew (resembles the specific tooth which you lost). Depending on the site and location of the missing teeth, the process of implantation can be a 3 stage or 2 stage process. It means, one visit for implant placement and bone graft (if needed),second visit for gum remodeling and the third for getting the final crown. This process might take 3-4 months or sometimes longer.Mostly the implant surgery and gum modelling could be done on single visit, talk to your dentist before and know exactly the time required for the crown delivery in you specific case. Why do dentists still do bridges? This is a question which comes up the patients mind every time. True, when implants are a better treatment and has a better success than any other tooth replacement option, why will my dentist recommend a bridge. There are certain clinical situation where bridges might prove better, like if both teeth next to the missing tooth are broken badly and might need a crown or placing an implant is simple not possible in some areas due to anatomical limitations then your dentist might recommend a bridge. But these are very rare situations and most of these limitations could be resolved with proper treatment planning. Level of training is another factor which comes in play when we talk about implant vs bridge treatment planning, Dentists with limited or no training on implant dentistry usually prefer planning the case with a denture or a bridge as the first option. Cost of the treatment can also be a hindrance to some, but with new technology and array of implants to choose from, cost of implants have come down tremendously. A simple implant and crown with no grafting can cost as low as $2500 in Manassas. Tremendous amount of  training needs to be done in order for a dentist to plan and do an implant. A weekend course most times are not a great option. If you are looking for dental implants in Manassas or dentist who places

In some cases, you may be eligible to have an implant in a day, with a temporary crown placed over the implant.  However, this may not be possible for a missing front tooth that bears a lot of weight and stress of biting and chewing.

An immediate removable denture, also known as a flipper, is an excellent interim measure to address the appearance of a missing tooth, while you heal and wait for the permanent crown.  An immediate denture is not designed to last a long time like a regular denture, but it is designed to help get you through until your permanent tooth replacement option is available

Tooth-Supported Fixed Bridge

Another front tooth replacement option is a fixed bridge.  A bridge consists of a pontic, or the crown in the middle replacing the missing tooth, and two anchors that cover the two adjacent teeth and are cemented into place.  Bridges can last quite a while and also have a natural look and feel.  However, if the adjacent teeth are healthy, a fixed bridge would require the “preparation” or shaving down, of those otherwise healthy teeth, which can potentially compromise their health in the long term, and those teeth may eventually require treatment or even replacement.

Maryland Bridge

A Maryland bridge is not a common treatment option, but it is available in the event that the adjacent teeth are healthy.  This type of bridge consists of the pontic or crown in the center, and is attached to unprepared teeth by “wings” which are bonded to the teeth.  This is also known as a resin-bonded bridge.  This option helps to preserve the health of adjacent teeth and looks and feels more natural than a denture, but is not as durable as a fixed bridge or a dental implant.

Removable Partial Denture

A removable partial denture works the same way as the flipper described above, but is more durable and designed to last for years with good care.  A denture, like a bridge, will not replace the absence of the tooth, and it is likely that the other teeth will shift closer together.  This may cause gaps and the appearance and even the health of your other teeth.

The loss of a front tooth can be an emotionally charged event.  No matter what, we are here to make sure you have the best possible care to help you restore the health of your original tooth if possible, and if not, to ensure you have the best information and options available to take action and feel comfortable and confident in your smile.

How Tooth Decay Occurs & How You Can Prevent It

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria in the mouth turn sugar into acids. Those acids eat away at surface of your teeth, causing decay and cavities.

Tooth decay occurs over time. However, it can be mostly prevented by cutting down on your sugar intake, watching what types of foods you eat, both sweet and savory, and ensuring that you are brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis. It also helps to visit your dentist two times per year to identify oral problems early and remove plaque and tartar buildup.

For this year’s holidays, go ahead and indulge. Just remember that, as with most things, moderation is the key.
